Donald Trump claims the system is rigged, and one subtle, yet notable example of the bias in American elections may bee seen in plain sight: Not a single debate moderator has been a heterosexual, Caucasian, Christian male.
Republican Presidential Nominee, Donald Trump happens to be a heterosexual, Caucasian, Christian male. According to the New York Times, “white men preferred [Hillary Clinton’s] Republican opponent, Donald J. Trump, to Mrs. Clinton almost two to one, 55 percent to 29 percent. These are the voters keeping Trump’s candidacy alive. He appeals to a regressive, patriarchal American whiteness.”
The Democratic Party prides itself on being a conglomeration of minorities. The success of the party is dependent on blocks of minorities voting to keep Democrats in office. These “minority” groups include Blacks, Jews, Latinos/Hispanics, Gays, Muslims, Asians and Women –although women outnumber men in the United States.
Christian vs. Jewish
In addition to white Christians, Muslims and Hispanics were also not represented as moderators, although neither Clinton nor Trump is Muslim or Hispanic. Straight, White, Christian males make up the second-largest demographic in America, second only to Straight, White, Christian women, yet neither demographic was represented in the form of a debate moderator. Jewish Americans who compose merely 2% of the U.S. demographic were represented twice, as two of the five moderators were Jewish.
